Getting academic credit for previous learning

You may be eligible to earn college credits from learning you’ve acquired elsewhere, such as workshops, employment, volunteering and other life experiences. Through our prior learning assessment and recognition (PLAR) process, we’ll work closely with you to make sure your experience counts toward your success at NIC.

How it works

We use one of two methods to assess a student’s prior learning, often combined with an in-person interview.

Method 1: Portfolio/flexible assessment

This method usually involves a combination of documentation, skill demonstrations, assignments and tests.

Method 2: Challenge exam(s)

This method uses formal examinations to allow students to prove their knowledge in an academic subject.

How do I get started?

The first step is to contact us. Our assessment services coordinator will work with you and the department chair of the program you wish to take to determine the best PLAR method to evaluate your prior learning.

How much does it cost?

The cost of the PLAR process is determined by the number of credits being requested. Fees are calculated at 75% of the tuition for each course and are due prior to your assessment. If additional costs are necessary, we will let you know in advance.
