Scott Bertram, faculty
I am a practicing abstract painter based in the Comox Valley. My artistic practice centres around ideas of improvisation, finding meaning in unintended stimuli, and playing with the dynamics of perception. I have participated in solo and group exhibitions across Canada as well as in the USA, Australia, Germany, Mexico, and the UK. I have also taught drawing and painting courses at NSCAD University (Halifax), the University of Manitoba (Winnipeg), and OCAD University (Toronto).

As a teacher, I strive to provide a challenging work environment wherein I present myself as an approachable and honest critical voice. I help students to discover new ideas and images by incorporating contemporary and historical art into studio courses as well as by incorporating a wide range of traditional and non-traditional methods into my assignments. The end goal of any of my given courses is not only to impart and then measure specific technical and creative skills, but also to encourage students to develop ambition, passion, and curiosity towards how those specific skills may be used in inventive ways for their own means.
